Find The Career Of A Lifetime By Attending The Right School

One of the most demanding jobs in the country at the present time is that of a surgical technologist. With the shortage of these technologists, this is the time for anyone looking for an exciting and rewarding career to choose this field. Fortunately, there are excellent schools available both on and offline.

People in these positions are part of an important team that works with surgeons, registered nurses, and other personnel in the operating room area. They help place needed supplies such as equipment, supplies, and instruments, as well as prepare the room for surgery and assist in operations.

Educational degrees may be obtained at a number of colleges, specialized schools, and even online. The program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills required to work in an operating room situation. Applications for these schools are available online at the different school websites.

Applying for entrance to the program requires a completed application form and proof of a GED, high school, or greater education level. The applicant must also pass an in-person interview. When hired for a position their employer will require a background check. The average tuition is $12,465 and financial aid is available at most schools.

Courses studied include such things as Introduction to Surgical technology, Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Physiology, Anatomy and Physiology II, Pharmacology, Surgical Technology (4 courses), Clinical Didactics, and Clinical Preceptorship. The latter course consists of hands-on experience in an actual operating room.

Upon completion of the program a National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certificate exam must be passed. This covers knowledge of operation technology, including theoretical and practical. Up on successful completion of this exam they will receive a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certificate.

The Bureau of Labor Standards shows that the 2010 median pay was $39,920 per year or $19.19 per hour for beginning Technologists. It also shows that between 2010 and 2010 an additional 17,700 of these jobs will be available. Most jobs are located in hospitals and outpatient surgery centers.

This is a job which requires a great deal of time on the feet and requires the ability to work well with others as a team. Surgical technologist schools provide the opportunity for a career as a technologist. This is an excellent choice for someone who is interested in the health field. There will always be sick people, many of who need the attention of an operating room. It is a job where a person's abilities are greatly appreciated.
